About

Welcome to the website and data tool for the Financial Inclusion Insights (FII) Program, from KantarThe FII Program was conceived in 2013 in partnership with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to build meaningful knowledge about the financial landscape in eight countries across Africa and Asia. Through qualitative and quantitative research we provide demand-side insights into consumer’s financial behaviors, and identify pathways so those most in need have the financial tools necessary to improve their economic stability.

Practical, Insightful Research to Change the Course of Lives

Three years of nationally representative survey data for Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania and Uganda are a main focus of the website and data tool. The site is organized with overviews of the countries and topics of primary interest and is a resource for Kantar-produced reports and blog posts. Up-to-date news on financial inclusion and links to our partner organizations are also offered. The interactive data tool allows users to query extensive FII data for information tailored to their interests.

With offices in Washington, D.C., and Nairobi, Kenya, Kantar has a dedicated team of researchers who oversee every aspect of this program, from designing the survey instruments to managing the field operations, data collection and administration, and providing strategic analysis. Data is reviewed by country, region and cross-country with topics and issues examined to provide input into real time decisions.

One of our most important mandates for FII is to disseminate data and findings into the hands of people, like yourself, to further your own efforts to expand financial inclusion globally. This website is a key component of our dissemination activities. We are very interested in making this site work for you and interested in your feedback. Please email us with your comments at info@finclusion.org.

Thank you,

The FII Team

Methodology

FII focuses on eight countries in Africa and Asia with a combined population of over 2 billion. Starting in 2013, Kantar has conducted annual nationally representative surveys in Bangladesh, India, Indonesia,[1] Kenya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Tanzania and Uganda. Within a 12-month cycle, Kantar updates the surveys, fields the questionnaires, tabulates data, analyzes findings and reports to the Gates Foundation and the larger financial inclusion community. The chart below shows the number of interviews conducted in each country:

The extensive questionnaire is built on a modular approach with sections on mobile phones, banks, mobile money and nonbank financial institutions. Each module explores awareness, access and use. In addition, the survey employs the Grameen Foundation’s Progress out of Poverty Index (PPI), as well as geographic, demographic and psychographic measures. The research is conducted among individuals 15 years and older.

Kantar works with the national statistics bureaus and local fielding partners in each country to ensure an accurate and representative survey. Kantar staff is always in the field directing and observing operations and training. An independent quality control team is deployed to confirm proper methodology is followed. Post collection, the data is weighted to conform to the national population, and several algorithms are run to again confirm accuracy. Detailed technical reports are produced by country and are available by request.

Throughout the year, additional quantitative and qualitative research projects are conducted. The methodology for each of those projects is included when results are reported.
